When you take a moment to think about it, much of our anxiety is caused by approval seeking.
Let's face it. We all want others to like us. Heck, we want everyone to like us. It's a natural part of being human. We want to belong. We want to be part of a 'tribe.' But here's the interesting thing:
Approval seeking is largely a waste of time and energy.
Most people are simply too occupied with their own lives to care as much as you think. They're too concerned with their own stories, the ones running through their own heads, just like you and me. They've got their own responsibilities, to-do lists, and thought patterns.
This wastes a lot of mental energy and creates a lot of unnecessary anxiety. Unfortunately, some of us live our entire lives according to what we think others will approve of. But here's the truth:
The only one you need approval from is yourself.
When we unconditionally accept ourselves, anxiety falls to the wayside.
Yoga and meditation are two ways to practice acceptance and getting to know yourself better. The deeper we go in our self-study, the more authentic we can become. And the more we know who we are, the less we care what others think of us.
